I move through the rest of the morning in a fog. I sit in the quad at the beginning of lunch listening to Sophie talk about her trip to San Francisco, and how great the play was. Marty and I nod our agreement, and all I want to do is ask her if she’s found anything else out about the fight and the photo and whatever happened to Jake’s phone.

Right at the moment there’s a lull in the conversation, Tony shows up at our table, his gaze going to me first. “You okay?” he asks gently, his brown eyes kind.

I blink up at him. “I’m fine. Thank you for asking.”

“Oh.” He hesitates. “I just figured Sophie told you what happened Friday.”

“I did,” Sophie says, smiling up at Tony like he hung the moon and the stars. “You want to join us?”

“I was sort of hoping I could take you to lunch.” He glances over at me and Marty while we stare at him. “Unless you want to stay here and hang out with your friends.”

“No.” Sophie pops up, grabbing her stuff. “Let’s go to lunch. You guys don’t mind, right?”

She doesn’t give us a chance to answer her. They’re gone in an instant, and Marty and I are left behind in a semi state of shock.

“Did that really just happen?” Marty asks me once they disappear from the quad.

Nodding, I grab my plastic bag of spicy chili-lime chips from Trader Joe’s and start munching.

“Do you think he’s up to something?” Marty asks after a few minutes of silence. When I send him a questioning look, he continues. “Tony. Do you think he’s setting our girl up for some major fail?”

“No way.” I shake my head, thinking of the concern in his voice when he asked if I was okay. For some weird reason, I trust him, even though I don’t know him that well. “Tony may hang out with those guys, but he’s the calmest one of the bunch.”

“The quiet ones are usually the ones you should watch out for the most,” Marty observes, both of us casting our gazes toward the opposite side of the quad, where the popular people hang out.

I don’t see Jake among them, which is a complete relief. But I also don’t see Cami either, which worries me. What if they’re together? People get caught messing around in the parking lot at school all the time. Considering we’re seniors, we can leave campus for lunch. Maybe Jake and Cami snuck away to somewhere private so they can do…

Whatever.

The thought fills me with humiliation. Hurt.

A little bit of anger.

“We’ll just have to watch out for her,” I tell Marty. “If he hurts her, we’ll take him down.”

Marty’s eyes go extra wide. “Take him down? Come on, Hannah, we don’t have that capability.”

“We do if he hurts our friend. I know I could,” I say vehemently, casting my gaze toward the popular group one more time. Caleb is sitting next to Diego and his girlfriend Jocelyn, who appears to be yelling at Diego.
